We have two programs that help prepare students to apply and test for Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) certification from the Federal Aviation Administration.79 These are the Airframe & Powerplant Technician program and the Aviation Maintenance Technology program, both of which also help prepare students for entry-level careers in the aviation industry.1

The Airframe & Powerplant Technician training program is coming soon pending regulatory approvals to two Universal Technical Institute campus locations: Avondale, Arizona, and Long Beach, California. The A&P and Aviation Maintenance Technology programs are also available at our MIAT College of Technology campus locations in Canton, Michigan, and Houston, Texas.

Both programs feature hands-on instruction from experienced teachers.18 In both programs, students learn skills that include:

Upon completion of the program, graduates will be prepared to apply for and take the written, oral and practical tests required to qualify for FAA A&P certification. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), aircraft mechanics and technicians are typically certified by the FAA.

Aviation Program Goals and Length

The goal of our programs is to prepare students for entry-level opportunities in various areas of the aviation industry. Students practice aircraft maintenance skills on industry-standard equipment in a safe and supervised setting.

The Airframe & Powerplant Technician training program is designed to take 18 to 20 months to complete, depending on location. The Aviation Maintenance Technology program is designed to take 24 months to complete at our MIAT locations.

Our Aviation programs are recognized by the FAA and teach students the skills they need to prepare to apply and test for FAA certification.80 Our programs give students the knowledge they need to work safely, as well as to prepare to obtain certifications needed for the industry.
