While you don't need a college degree to enter the field, most employers prefer candidates who have completed motorcycle technician training from a reputable institution. These programs provide the foundational skills needed for engine repair, electrical diagnostics, suspension systems and more. 

Universal Technical Institute (UTI) offers a 48-week Motorcycle Technician training program that teaches students skills for the industry.1,7 They complete their core training during the Motorcycle Technician Prerequisite (MTP) portion of the program before moving on to manufacturer-specific training. 

This manufacturer-specific training allows students to get brand-specific knowledge. UTI offers specialized training with Harley-Davidson, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and BMW.

  • Harley-Davidson Mechanic Training: Graduates have the opportunity to earn brand-specific Harley-Davidson credentials and are qualified to apply for entry-level positions in Harley-Davidson-authorized dealerships. 
  • Honda HonTech: After completing 90 days of tenure in a Honda dealership, eligible HonTech students can receive Bronze field designation. 
  • Yamaha YamaPro: YamaPro students are able to earn Yamaha Bronze technician certification level. 
  • Suzuki FAST: Suzuki FAST graduates can earn Bronze and Silver Technician Recognition level. (Program only offered at UTI Phoenix.) 
  • Kawasaki K-Tech: Grads have the opportunity to receive a Kawasaki-endorsed Specialist Certification after working in a dealership for 180 days.   
  • BMW Motorrad: Graduates of the program are eligible for BMW Motorrad USA Member Level 1  Motorcycle Technician status upon employment at a BMW Motorrad dealership.

Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a Certified Motorcycle Technician 

1. Complete high school or obtain a GED 

Most employers require at least a high school diploma or equivalent to start working in the field. They’re also often a prerequisite for attending a trade school or training program.
