Ever thought about becoming an automotive technician? If you have a passion for cars, possess an eye for detail and are a hands-on learner, this could be the career path for you. The automotive industry is continuing to evolve at a rapid rate due to changes in technology, creating exciting opportunities for today’s technicians.

If you’re considering a career as an automotive technician, you probably have some questions. Here are answers to five commonly asked questions about the industry:

1. Does UTI offer specialized training with specific automotive brands?

Yes. After completing UTI’s core Automotive Technology program, eligible students can apply for Manufacturer-Specific Advanced Training (MSAT) programs.11 These programs are created in collaboration with top brands like BMW, Ford, GM and Volvo to help students build skills directly aligned with manufacturer standards.

2. What kind of support services are available to students during their training?

UTI offers a range of student support services, including career services, housing assistance and financial aid.10

3. Can I earn credit toward my UTI training while still in high school?

Yes. Through various articulation agreements with high schools and career and technical education (CTE) programs, you may be able to earn credit before enrolling. This can help you start your post-graduation training with a head start.

4. Are automotive technicians in demand?

Yes. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are an estimated 67,000+ average annual job openings for automotive service technicians and mechanics nationwide between 2023 and 2033.41 As vehicle technology evolves, skilled technicians—especially those trained on newer systems—continue to be in demand.

5. What do leading car manufacturers think of UTI graduates?

UTI has relationships with over 30 leading automotive manufacturers, many of which collaborate with the school to shape training programs and recruit graduates. These manufacturers trust the hands-on, industry-aligned training UTI provides and often look to its graduates to fill roles in their dealerships and service networks.1,18
