Located near Tamarac, Florida, Universal Technical Institute (UTI) offers a welding school that helps students prepare to pursue exciting careers in a variety of industries. From combination welding to reading blueprints and adhering to safety standards — graduates from UTI Miramar gain entry-level skills that employers are looking for.1 Read on to learn more about the program.

Narrowing down your “welding school near me” search can feel overwhelming. If you’re in or around the Tamarac area, consider UTI’s Miramar welding school. The campus is about 23 miles south of Tamarac, and the program takes just 36 weeks to complete.

Through in-depth instruction and hands-on training led by experienced instructors, students learn how to properly use current technology and equipment. For example, UTI Miramar Welding students train with VRTEX® virtual welders, a tool that simulates welding to help students learn to think on their feet and adjust their skills as necessary.

This type of welding training helps students prepare to pursue entry-level positions in roles like welder, welder fitter, or fabrication welder.

UTI’s welding school topics include:

  • Introduction to Welding, Safety and Careers
  • Principles of Welding
  • Gas Metal Arc Welding I and II (GMAW)
  • Shielded Metal Arc Welding I and II (SMAW)
  • Engineering and Fabrication
  • Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)
  • Pipe Welding
  • Welding Applications I and II
  • Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

These welding courses can help prepare students to pursue exciting careers in or near Tamarac or another part of the country, if they desire.

Welding skills are in demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), renewing the country’s aging infrastructure will require repairs that demand welding skills. Welders will also continue to be vital to manufacturing plants that create metal components and goods. While welders often work in manufacturing plants, they can also be found at automotive repair shops, oil rigs, railroads, farms and more.

According to the BLS, the median annual salary for welders, cutters, solderers and brazers in the South Florida area was $46,930 in May 2022.26 This means half earned more and half earned less. Keep in mind that salary depends on several factors, including experience, employer, demand and cost of living in the area.

At the end of UTI’s 36-week Welding training program, grads can begin pursuing entry-level positions within the field. Some of these may include:

  • Welders: Aside from performing maintenance on welds, entry-level welders use various welding processes to bond metal together. They may also act as an assistant to more senior welders.
  • Welder fitters: Interpret and closely adhere to blueprints to gather the tools and assemble the materials needed for a project.
  • Fabrication welders: Use welding, cutting, shaping and finishing processes to create final products from raw materials like metal, thermoplastics and even wood.

While most of our grads start out working in one of the entry-level roles noted above, as with any industry, over time, you may be able to advance in your career with hard work.77 Set your goals early on — learn more about advanced welding career paths by checking out our welding careers page.

While the above roles are popular entry-level and advanced positions within the industry, it’s important to remember that location can affect the type of opportunities available. For that reason, our Career Services team maintains relationships with employers across the nation to help students look for potential career opportunities once they graduate.1
