What Is ASE Certification?

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1972. Its mission is to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals.

When a technician passes an ASE exam, it signals they’ve demonstrated competence in a specific area of automotive service. From engine diagnostics to brake systems, these tests are designed to ensure consistency and professionalism across the industry.

ASE works with manufacturers, repair shops and educators to maintain high standards. Their certification program encourages ongoing training so that technicians stay up-to-date with modern vehicle technology.

For customers, seeing the ASE seal on a shop wall or technician’s uniform provides reassurance. For technicians, it represents credibility and pride in their trade.

An ASE certification protects customers by helping ensure techs are qualified, so repairs are done correctly and safely. Drivers rely on certified professionals for work that directly impacts road safety.

It also helps shop owners and customers gauge a technician’s skill level before hiring them or agreeing to service. Certification can build trust and make it easier to assign the right jobs to the right techs.

Finally, ASE credentials can expand career options. Certified professionals often have access to more job opportunities, higher pay potential and greater long-term stability.

What Areas Are Covered With an ASE Certification?

Is It Hard To Become a Certified Auto Technician?

Becoming a certified auto technician can be challenging, but it’s achievable with the right preparation and hands-on experience. ASE certification exams are designed to test real-world knowledge, not just theory, which means technicians need a solid understanding of vehicle systems and practical repair skills before testing.

Many aspiring technicians find the process more manageable when they complete formal training first. Programs that combine classroom instruction with hands-on lab work help students build the foundational skills ASE exams are based on, making it easier to approach certification with confidence rather than guesswork.

How Long Does It Take To Get ASE Certified?

Testing for certification requires hands-on work experience, which varies depending on the test you choose. According to ASE’s requirements, technicians need at least two years of relevant experience to apply for testing.

At UTI, completing the Automotive Technology program counts as one year of that requirement because the program is ASE-accredited.16 That means graduates are better prepared to test for certification sooner.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need work experience to take ASE certification exams?

Yes. ASE requires a combination of hands-on work experience and testing to earn certification. In some cases, formal automotive training can count toward part of the required experience, helping technicians become eligible to test sooner. This is the case with UTI’s Automotive program.

How many ASE certifications are there?

There is a total of nine Automobile & Light Truck Certification ASE Exams:

  • A1 – Engine Repair (50 scored questions)
  • A2 – Automatic Transmission/Transaxle (50)
  • A3 – Manual Drive Train & Axles (40)
  • A4 – Suspension & Steering (40)
  • A5 – Brakes (45)
  • A6 – Electrical/Electronic Systems (50)
  • A7 – Heating & Air Conditioning (50)
  • A8 – Engine Performance (50)
  • A9 – Light Vehicle Diesel Engines (50)

Some auto techs pursue multiple while others choose to focus on one. Technicians who earn certifications A1-A8 are recognized as ASE Master Technicians!

Does auto mechanic school prepare you for ASE certification?

Yes, the best auto mechanic schools align their curriculum with ASE standards. For example, UTI is accredited by the ASE Education Foundation, meaning our courses directly prepare you to test for the credential. You’ll also learn from ASE-certified instructors!

How often do ASE certifications need to be renewed?

ASE certifications must be renewed every five years to remain active. Renewal exams are shorter than the initial certification tests and primarily focus on verifying that a technician’s knowledge is still up to date as vehicle technology evolves.

How should I study for the ASE certification exams?

One effective way to prepare for ASE certification exams is by using the organization’s official practice assessments that mirror the structure and difficulty of the real tests. These online tools use the same question style as ASE exams, allowing you to gauge your readiness and become familiar with how questions are presented.
