What Is UTI’s Aviation Technician Training?  

UTI’s Airframe & Powerplant program is designed to prepare students to pursue careers as aviation mechanics after graduation.79 Training combines classroom instruction with hands-on lab application, where you’ll learn how to inspect, repair and maintain aircraft systems. The program follows Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) standards and helps prepare grads to test for FAA A&P certification.128 

How Long Does the Aviation Training Take To Complete?  

The aircraft mechanic training program at UTI can typically be completed in about 18-24 months, depending on the program. This timeline is designed to get you the training you need quickly so you can start pursuing career opportunities in the aviation industry after graduation. 

What Will I Learn During Aircraft Mechanic Training at UTI?  

During training, you’ll cover both airframe and powerplant systems, including: 

  • Hydraulics, pneumatics and landing gear systems 
  • Sheet metal, composites and structural repair 
  • Turbine and piston engines 
  • Fuel, ignition and electrical systems 
  • Cabin environmental controls and fire protection systems 

You’ll also gain exposure to program-specific courses that provide the knowledge needed to maintain, repair and troubleshoot aircraft after graduation.

What Kind of Jobs Can I Pursue After Completing Aviation Mechanic Training?

Do I Need Experience Before Enrolling in Aviation Training?  

No prior aviation experience is required to enroll. UTI’s instructors teach from the ground up, helping students build skills step by step. Many students enter the program as recent high school graduates or career changers without previous industry experience. 

What Certifications or Credentials Can I Earn After Graduating from Aviation Mechanic Training?  

Graduates will be prepared to test for FAA Airframe & Powerplant certification. This is the federal license required to work as an aircraft mechanic. While UTI provides the training, certification is granted by the FAA upon successful completion of the required exams. 

In addition, students at UTI Canton who successfully complete the Airframe & Powerplant Technician program have the opportunity to continue their education and earn an associate of applied science (AAS) degree in aviation maintenance in just four additional months. This additional credential may support graduates in their career pursuits and demonstrate a higher level of academic achievement.6 

Does UTI Help With Job Placement After Graduation?  

Yes. UTI’s Career Services team offers support such as resume development, interview preparation and access to nationwide job postings. While UTI cannot guarantee employment, many students benefit from the guidance and employer connections provided by Career Services. 

How Much Does the Aviation Training Cost?
