From Lube Tech to Leadership at Ford: Gonzalo Gomez Jr.’s Story

Now the shop foreman at Galpin Ford, Gonzalo Gomez Jr. oversees the main shop, ensuring that all work is completed efficiently and correctly. His responsibilities also include interviewing new hires and maintaining excellent customer relations. But his path to this leadership role was anything but straightforward.

Finding His Path at UTI

Gonzalo started his career as a lube tech, working diligently for a few years. Realizing he wanted more from his career, he decided to pursue formal training in automotive technology. "I was actually going to a community college, but it just wasn't for me," Gonzalo explains. His passion for cars led him to Universal Technical Institute (UTI), where he enrolled in the core Automotive Technology program and later advanced his training through the Ford FACT program. This decision was a turning point, setting him on a path toward new opportunities and success.1

Climbing the Ranks at Galpin Ford

After graduating from UTI, Gonzalo's certifications and enhanced knowledge prepared him to pursue different roles at Ford. "UTI helped me out a lot.. because I had certifications and more of the base knowledge of working on a car,” he says. Starting as an apprentice helper, Gonzalo worked his way up, moving from department to department. His perseverance and commitment paid off, and after years of hard work, he achieved the role of shop foreman. 6

The Ford FACT programplayed a crucial role in Gonzalo's career development. Graduating with Ford-specific credentials gave him a specialized knowledge base, allowing him  to pursue other roles at Ford. "The Ford FACT program helps you get into the main shop a lot faster," Gonzalo notes. This specialized training not only equipped him with essential technical skills but also provided a solid foundation for his leadership role at Ford.
