UTI’s basic automotive electrical training in Automotive Physical Science Principles: Electrical Fundamentals is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the electrical systems in today’s vehicles.

By integrating theoretical principles from physical sciences with hands-on training, this course equips students to diagnose and repair electrical circuits, batteries and starting/charging systems.18

Topics focused on in this course include:

Understanding and Applying Ohm’s Law

Students will explore Ohm’s law, which defines the relationship between voltage, current and resistance in an electrical circuit. This principle is vital for diagnosing issues in automotive electrical systems and ensures precise and efficient repairs.

Mastering Watt’s Law

The Basic Automotive Electrical Course also covers Watt’s law, helping students calculate power consumption and efficiency in electrical components. This knowledge is essential for troubleshooting problems in energy-intensive systems like lighting and climate control.

Operations and Properties of Electrical Circuits and Components

Students will gain a thorough understanding of how electrical circuits operate, including series and parallel configurations. They’ll also study components such as resistors, capacitors, diodes and relays, and their roles in vehicle systems.

Exploring Magnetism and Electromagnetism

Students are taught the principles of magnetism and electromagnetism and their applications in automotive systems. Topics include the operation of motors, alternators and solenoids, which rely on electromagnetic principles for functionality.

Battery Chemistry and Maintenance

The course delves into the chemical properties of automotive batteries, including their construction, function and maintenance requirements. Students are taught to diagnose battery-related issues and ensure proper charging and storage practices.

Diagnosing and Servicing Starting/Charging Systems

Hands-on training includes diagnosing and repairing starting and charging systems.18 Students are taught to identify issues with alternators, starters and voltage regulators, ensuring reliable vehicle operation.

Using Diagnostic Tools and Techniques

Students will become proficient with industry-standard tools, such as multimeters and test lights, for testing and troubleshooting electrical circuits. They’ll also develop the skills to interpret wiring diagrams and schematics effectively.
