  • No prior experience needed

WELDING TYPES TAUGHT

At UTI, we provide versatile hands-on welding training, which means we don’t just limit students to one method of welding. Instead, we cover four main types of arc welding.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW)

Also known as TIG welding, which stands for tungsten inert gas, GTAW uses inert gasses such as argon or helium as protective shielding agents. The TIG process uses a tungsten electrode with a high melting point that delivers the heat to the metals, melting the metals in the process.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)

SMAW welding, also known as stick welding, is a method that can be used in all positions. It utilizes a flux-coated electrode (metal stick in an electrode holder) connected to a power source to touch the base metal and produce a weld.

Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW)

GMAW is a method using a continuous solid wire electrode through the welding gun, accompanied by a shielding protective gas that prevents contamination. The process can be semi-automatic or fully automatic, making it a great choice for beginners. It can be used indoors for industries like construction, manufacturing, aerospace and vehicle production.

Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)

FCAW utilizes a continuous hollow wire electrode with a flux compound that protects the weld pool by forming a gas. FCAW is becoming popular in the general fabrication, shipbuilding and construction industries due to its higher deposition rates and efficiencies. It is also commonly used on carbon steel and stainless alloys.

WELDING COURSES COMING TO UTI SACRAMENTO

With a curriculum built in conjunction with Lincoln Electric, welding training at UTI Sacramento means hands-on training tailored to industry needs. Here are some of the welding courses to be offered at the Sacramento campus:

Introduction to Welding, Safety and Careers

Students are introduced to the various welding methods and equipment used. Also covered are the many careers and positions that an entry-level welder may pursue and how to pursue industry certifications after graduation.

Principles of Welding

Students are introduced to the different types of joints, positions and symbols used throughout welding technology. They will learn the properties of metal, its classifications, and how to use tools that prepare metal for welding.

Gas Metal Arc Welding I

Students learn how to set up and use GMAW equipment and the accessories required to weld. Students also learn basic maintenance of a GMAW-style welder, including gas hookup and wire spool replacement.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding I

Students learn how to set up and use SMAW equipment and accessories required to weld. They also learn the different electrodes/rods available to carry out specific weld types.

Engineering and Fabrication

Students learn how to read blueprints and interpret the codes, standards, terms and definitions used in welding documentation. They also acquire the applied math and measurement skills needed for planning, preparation and fabrication of projects.

Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)

Students discover the benefits of both gas and gasless flux-cored welding and where they are used. They will learn how to set up and operate flux-cored welding equipment.

Pipe Welding

Students will be introduced to the different methods of welding pipe. They will learn various welding positions, as well as how to use the correct tools and equipment for cutting and beveling joints during assembly.

Welding Applications I

Students will build projects using the skills learned throughout the program. They’ll also demonstrate their ability to perform multiple weld types in various positions.
