Here at Universal Technical Institute, we’re all about empowering the next generation. For more than 55 years, we’ve trained students for careers in the skilled trades—from the fields of automotive and diesel to welding and CNC machining.1 We have delivered more than 220,000 graduates, have campuses across the nation and are continuing to grow.
As part of this growth, we’re excited to announce that MIAT College of Technology is joining UTI’s family of schools. This opportunity will allow us to expand into innovative, exciting industries while preparing students to pursue opportunities in the industries and communities we serve. We look forward to adding MIAT’s incredible programs to the UTI family and opening the door to new career fields.
Keep reading to learn all about how this will help further our mission to provide quality education and training to prepare students for technical careers.
Since 1969, MIAT College of Technology has equipped students with the skills needed to pursue technical careers. Like UTI, MIAT is focused on providing industry-aligned training to prepare for entry-level roles.
MIAT has campus locations in Canton, MI, and Houston, TX, and offers programs in aviation maintenance, energy, wind energy, robotics and automation, non-destructive testing, HVAC and refrigeration. With the addition of MIAT, the UTI family of schools now serves over 13,000 students across 15 campuses and under four brand names.
“On behalf of the entire UTI family, I am excited to officially welcome the MIAT staff, students, faculty and alumni to the team,” says UTI CEO Jerome Grant.
“This acquisition represents an important step in our growth and diversification strategy, allowing us to further expand our program offerings into fields that we believe will continue to be bolstered by technological advances and the world’s increasing focus on sustainability.”
This is the first step towards UTI offering MIAT programs at current and under-construction UTI brand campuses, and extending UTI's presence and programs into the Canton, MI market where MIAT has been for over 50 years. MIAT’s programs include: 2
The addition of MIAT’s programs will position UTI to move into innovative fields, fueled by the country’s emphasis on sustainable energy and continuous technological advancements.
Similar to UTI’s programs, MIAT’s programs are designed to equip students with skills that can be applied to a wide variety of settings, from powerplants and factories to wind turbines and commercial airlines. They graduate with a strong foundation of skills they can build upon.
“We are tremendously excited about the addition of MIAT College of Technology and to advance our strategy to serve more students, particularly in fields important to our nation,” says Jerome.
“Notably, many of MIAT’s programs are aligned with expected macroeconomic developments, such as green initiatives and alternative energy, onshoring of manufacturing, and infrastructure investment.”1
UTI and MIAT are both strong companies with complementary programs. UTI has long respected MIAT’s programs and outcomes, and is looking forward to bringing training for new career paths to additional markets.
With the addition of MIAT, UTI’s family of schools can now offer training to prepare students to pursue careers in additional fields. This will also serve employers across the nation by providing a pipeline of skilled trade professionals they can rely on to help keep their businesses moving forward.
Information about MIAT’s programs — including program length, course topics and graduation documents — can be found on the Program pages on the UTI.edu website:
MIAT has campus locations in Canton, MI, and Houston, TX. Similar to UTI’s campuses, they are equipped with state-of-the-industry tools and technology, and designed to mirror the types of environments that technicians experience in the field.
There is no plan to close any campuses. All facilities will remain fully operational, and we’re exploring bringing select MIAT programs to UTI locations.
No changes will be made to the programs or graduation dates of current students. Their training will continue as planned. This applies to current students across all UTI and MIAT campuses.
Students are currently able to enroll in UTI and MIAT programs. To learn more about enrolling in MIAT’s programs, visit the Canton, MI, or Houston, TX campus pages. To learn about UTI’s programs, request information.
