Racetracks and Racing Opportunities near Dallas, TX

Immediately to the northwest of Dallas, located in Irving, TX is Universal Technical Institute’s campus serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Dallas is the third most populated city in Texas, and the ninth most populated in the U.S. With so many people, the city has a vibrant community of racing enthusiasts from around the country.

Since 2010, UTI Dallas has offered training programs for students interested in the Auto and Diesel industries, and more recently, a Welding program was launched. The student experience at UTI Dallas is anything but ordinary, especially for those who love racing. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved both in and outside of class!

If racing gets your blood flowing, check out these tracks and venues to keep you busy during your time away from class:

Dirt Tracks

Kennedale Speedway Park is located about 33 miles southwest of UTI Dallas. From February through October/November, this quarter-mile dirt oval hosts various types of racing, including dwarf cars, sprint cars, modified cars and more.

About an hour’s drive southeast of campus is Crandall, TX, home of RPM Speedway. This classic dirt oval hosts everything from modified cars to factory stock cars, dwarf cars and more. RPM claims that a night at their race track is the most affordable family night activity in Texas.

Devil’s Bowl is another dirt track option for UTI Dallas students to watch the action. Claimed to be the Southwest’s most famous dirt track, this D shaped half-mile track is located in Mesquite, TX—less than one hour east of campus.

Drag Racing

Denton, TX, located about 36 miles north of UTI Dallas, is home to North Star Dragway. Street legal drag races are held here all summer, so if you’re curious about your car’s 1/8th mile time or you want to challenge your friends with head-to-head action, this is your place. Keeping it safe and keeping it off the streets is the best way to race.

Yello Belly Dragstrip is less than 20 miles south of campus. Known as “The Place to Race since 1955,” Yello Belly hosts street legal drags, funny cars and more on their quarter-mile track. For drag racing fans, Yello Belly is a great place to watch or even get some seat time under the Christmas tree when you’re not in school.

Other Race Tracks

Texas Motor Speedway hosts NASCAR, Formula Drift, dirt track, drag racing and more, and needs no introduction. This classic track is located in Fort Worth, TX—about 20 miles northwest of campus. This is a must-see for all racing fans.

Lastly, about 11 miles southwest of UTI Dallas is SpeedZone Dallas. If you’re into go kart racing, this is the place to be. In addition to offering three types of karts, SpeedZone has simulated drag racing, an arcade and more. Experience racing without the significant expense of building and owning a racecar!
