Diesel Instructor Adam Schmeel Challenges UTI Sacramento Students to Races

"Coming from a long line of teachers, I enjoy watching the future generation of technicians grow and learn."

Adam Schmeel’s favorite hobby is working on Volkswagens. He specifically points out his 1982 Volkswagen Rabbit Pick-up. It started life as a diesel. Now it’s a 12-valve VR-6. “It’s about a 13.8 second car right now,” he touts. He loves to come out to the local Sacramento drag strip and challenge current UTI students to bracket races.
Adam’s always been in love with trucks. In fact, so much that he turned his hobby into a career and graduated from UTI in 2008. Later, returning to further his training in the Manufacturer Specific Advanced Training program ITEP (International Technician Education Program).

When he was just an entry-level technician at Westrux in Colton, California, his first job out of school, Adam was named team trainer when the group was out on calls. It was out in the field that Adam drew on his learnings from UTI and used them to influence the way he provided guidance to the other technicians.

He worked at Westrux for about a year-and-a-half, and then received the opportunity to advance his career and work at Bayshore International in Hayward, an independent International Truck Rental facility.

When his wife was offered a job in the Sacramento area, he thought it was the perfect time to go back to his roots. “Since I went to UTI, I always thought it would be kind of cool to teach there,” Adam says. Coming from a long line of teachers, he enjoys watching the future generation of technicians grow and learn. He anxiously applied and through his industry experience and credentials was quickly brought on board as an instructor back where it all began.
