PLANNING FOR THE FUTURE

Thinking about life after high school can be both exciting and overwhelming for many students. As a guidance counselor, you can help your students see the big picture when planning for the future. Knowledge is power, and the more your students are informed about the options that may be available to them, the more at ease they will feel as they plan for the next big step.

At Universal Technical Institute (UTI), we understand that education is a major investment for most families. When anyone makes an investment, it’s important to consider the return. We want you to have all of the information necessary to feel empowered in helping your students and their families make the best decision.

Technicians are in demand, and advancements in technology have opened the door to exciting, new opportunities. For a student who likes to solve problems using his or her head and hands, and wants to train for a career without spending years in school, UTI’s accelerated programs can help them get there.1 Planning for the future should be exciting—and our team is here to help you and your students every step of the way!

HOW TO COUNSEL STUDENTS ABOUT A CAREER

As a guidance counselor, you can play an integral role in your students’ postsecondary journey. Whether your students are set on a specific career path or are still exploring, you can help to narrow down their interests and introduce them to options that may align with their goals.

When helping high school students choose a career, take a look at factors such as their favorite classes, extracurricular activities, hobbies and personality. This can help you to gain an understanding of the type of education that caters to their learning style and can lead to their desired career.

MAKING THE DECISION BETWEEN COLLEGE AND A TRADE SCHOOL

Many students fail to consider the various types of postsecondary education available to them. While the traditional four-year college route may work for some, it’s not the only path that leads to a career. For students who prefer to work with their hands rather than spend time in a classroom, enrolling at a trade school like UTI may be the perfect fit.

Traditional four-year colleges and universities typically lead to a bachelor’s degree upon graduation and require the completion of prerequisite general education courses such as science, math, history and English. This type of coursework often spans the first two years of the student’s undergraduate program before they get into the courses specific to their major.

Trade schools, on the other hand, provide programs that can often be completed in one year or less. The coursework students complete at a trade school focuses on teaching job-specific skills that allow students to gain industry expertise in their chosen field. Classes offered at trade schools are often smaller in size and cater to hands-on learners. At a school like UTI, classes are designed to simulate the environment students will be exposed to when they work in the field.

For students who desire a career in the trades, such as becoming an automotive technician, welder or CNC machinist, a trade school like UTI can provide them with the specialized training they need to succeed in the industry.

ABOUT UNIVERSAL TECHNICAL INSTITUTE

UTI is the nation’s leading provider of training for automotive, diesel, collision repair, motorcycle and marine technicians, and offers welding technology and computer numerical control (CNC) machining programs. In its 53-year history, UTI has built relationships with industry leaders and delivers training that is aligned with employer needs.

Our programs were designed for those who learn best by doing and are looking for an accelerated path to preparing for a career. UTI’s training programs begin every 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the campus, and some programs can prepare students for the professional workforce in under a year.2

UTI’s industry-aligned curriculum gives students the opportunity to gain skills directly related to the career they’re pursuing. Learning at UTI takes place in dynamic classroom and lab environments where students train with the same tools and technologies used by technicians in the field.

As they complete their training, students have the support of caring instructors. In addition to learning the mechanics the industry requires, students have access to a variety of resources to support them as they pursue a career doing what they love. Their success is our success.

APPLYING TO UTI

UTI strives to make the application and enrollment process as seamless as possible for students. Our new online application walks students through the process step-by-step, and requires no fee to apply.

For students who might have questions before applying, they can request information to get in touch with one of our Admissions Representatives. Whether students have questions about admissions requirements, tuition or programs, our team is here to provide the answers they need to help them feel confident about the decision to attend UTI.

QUALITY CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTORS

UTI places a great emphasis on the quality of our curriculum and instructors. Our curriculum was created in conjunction with leading manufacturers and focuses on teaching students in-demand skills employers need. This is a reason why many companies look to UTI when hiring their technicians.

MENTORSHIP AT UTI

Our instructors go above and beyond to support their students. They’re more than just teachers—they’re mentors. Many of our instructors have years of experience working in the field, which allows them to integrate real-world application into their courses.

UTI instructors are passionate about empowering the next generation and are eager to share their knowledge and experience with students. Many of them are UTI graduates themselves! In all they do, they strive to empower students toward success—whether this means spending time outside of class to answer questions or giving a student advice for an upcoming job interview.

UTI TUITION & FINANCING

There’s no doubt that cost is one of the biggest concerns among students considering options for their postsecondary education. At UTI, we believe students and their families should feel confident and informed when it comes to financing their education. Our team is here to provide guidance and share costs upfront so students can plan accordingly.

A variety of options may be available to students in order to reduce the cost of their training, including financial aid, scholarships3 and grants. Some graduates could also benefit from UTI’s Tuition Reimbursement Incentive Program (TRIP),, which may include student loan repayment assistance, tool purchase assistance and sign-on bonuses.4

We understand that many students feel overwhelmed when it comes to finances, which is why our Financial Aid team is here to walk them through every step of the process. From calculating tuition costs to securing financial aid, our team is here to provide students with the information they need to feel confident in their decision to train at UTI.
