Steve McElfresh brings more than 24 years of operations and management experience to his position as Campus President at Universal Technical Institute (UTI) Bloomfield in Bloomfield, New Jersey. McElfresh has been with UTI since 2011, serving 2 years as Director of Education / Operations in at UTI in Exton, Pennsylvania, before becoming Campus President at UTI Orlando in Florida from 2013 to 2018. In March 2018, he opened the UTI Bloomfield campus, the newest UTI campus, as Campus President.

Prior to UTI, McElfresh worked as a District Sales Manager for more than 9 years with CVS Caremark Corporation, a promotion after his 6 years as Store Manager. McElfresh applies a customer-centric focus to his duties at UTI, with a goal to create a culture of “care and happy.” McElfresh empowers everyone on his staff to be educators, regardless of role. Every team member at UTI Bloomfield makes a commitment to make students successful.

At UTI Bloomfield, five former UTI graduates now assume roles as instructors, knowing first-hand what students are experiencing. McElfresh says the fact so many graduates have come back to teach at UTI is a testament to the confidence in and respect for the UTI brand.

McElfresh has built strong relationships with members of regional chambers of commerce, as well as local township officials and council members, to promote the value of UTI in the tri-state area. McElfresh spoke on a panel for the Age of Agility Summit New Jersey in 2019. The Age of Agility Summit New Jersey brings together business leaders, education advocates and policymakers to explore the relationship between technology innovation and workforce needs.

Under McElfresh’s Campus President leadership, UTI Bloomfield regularly hosts community-building events. These include weekly car shows in August in partnership with the City of Bloomfield and the Bloomfield Cruisers, as well as an annual toy drive during the holiday season.

Philosophy on Trade School Education

According to McElfresh, trade school is often a misunderstood or missed opportunity for parents and prospective students. McElfresh encourages aspiring college students to research all choices available to them, including all types of trade schools.

McElfresh says studying Automotive or Diesel technology at UTI Bloomfield gives students the opportunity to marry a love of vehicles with emerging technology. Students who are still deciding on their future after high school can check out UTI Bloomfield’s Ignite program. Ignite is a free 3-week summer program available to soon-to-be high school seniors who want to learn similar training UTI full-time students receive.

In the classroom, McElfresh encourages an open and supportive environment, one in which students are comfortable asking instructors questions about the curriculum, as well as about life lessons. McElfresh promotes instruction that focuses on integrity and customer service, which are values seen throughout the school’s team.

The UTI Bloomfield team is proactive in getting students the help they need to thrive, including partnering with parents to help keep students accountable. McElfresh says at UTI Bloomfield, students are taught more than the technical aspects to the business – they master professionalism, as well.

Cutting-Edge Technology at UTI Bloomfield

McElfresh says the opportunity to be a part of a UTI campus from its inception excited him and has been a rewarding journey. As the newest UTI campus, UTI Bloomfield is fueled by technology and covers 108,000 square feet, with 14 on-campus classrooms and 15 training labs.

McElfresh and his team cultivate employer and manufacturer relationships with local businesses like Crown and Penske to gain insights for curriculum that will help prepare students for work in the industry. UTI Bloomfield currently offers the Manufacturer-Specific Advanced Training the Ford Accelerated Credential Training (FACT) Program in addition to its core automotive and diesel programs.

McElfresh says his goal is to hit campus capacity, both filling the needs of the industry while fueling the passion of UTI Bloomfield students.  And, he looks forward to growth from there. UTI Bloomfield places a strong emphasis on compliance and has been fully approved by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).

McElfresh Outside of UTI

McElfresh was born in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1969. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Management from Penn State University.

McElfresh and his wife Amy have a son approaching high school and a daughter in middle school.  He and his family enjoy visiting relatives, outdoor activities and projects around the house.

McElfresh is passionate about cars and has been a car enthusiast since he was 3 years old. He says the opportunity to join a company that focuses on cars and helps students follow a similar interest he has and make it their career was inspiring.

When he’s not working, McElfresh enjoys tinkering with his 1972 Chevy Impala and 1975 Chevy Chevelle. He says his therapy is detailing cars.

After working with motorcycle students in Orlando, McElfresh was motivated to get his motorcycle license, as well. He has a side car motorcycle that he takes out when the weather is nice.
