Julie Mueller has more than 22 years of leadership experience and has been Campus President at Universal Technical Institute in Illinois since 2010. Prior to her current role, she served as Regional Director of Student Services from 2006-2010 and as Student Services Director from 1998-2005 at UTI in Illinois.

Under Mueller’s leadership, the UTI Illinois campus relocated from Glendale Heights to Lisle in 2013. UTI Lisle won a School of Excellence Award from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC) in 2014 for an accreditation that took place just a couple weeks after the relocation. UTI Lisle achieved a rare consecutive School of Excellence Award from ACCSC in 2019.

UTI Lisle campus has achieved such flawless marks during the past two accreditation cycles, that the next campus accreditation has been extended an extra year.

In 2014, the Illinois Chamber of Commerce and Illinois Development Council named the relocation of UTI to the Village of Lisle as a recipient of the 2014 Economic Development in Illinois (Edie) Award. The award recognized UTI Lisle as a company for investing in Illinois, providing jobs and bringing economic opportunity to communities.

In 2016, UTI Lisle received the ACCSC’s Excellence in Student Services Award, the top campus honor awarded to just one school across the country.

In 2018, Mueller was selected by Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner to attend the State-Federal Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Education Summit hosted by The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in Washington, D.C.

Since Mueller has been Campus President, UTI Lisle has opened several new programs, including the following Manufacturer-Specific Advanced Training (MSAT) programs: Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) Finish FirstPeterbilt Technician Institute (PTI) and Mercedes-Benz DRIVE Program. Mueller leads the 75 employees at UTI Lisle to provide exceptional student support, while maintaining the highest standard of industry compliance.

Community Outreach & Industry Partnerships

One of the most instrumental ways Mueller has led campus growth at UTI Lisle is by developing strong partnerships with the local workforce. These relationships have led to a grant development program, where UTI Lisle students may be eligible for grants.

Mueller and the UTI Lisle team are part of four chambers of commerce within the Lisle community, including the Lisle Area Chamber of Commerce and the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce, both of which Mueller has been a member of since 2013. In 2017, Mueller was voted into the Illinois Chamber of Commerce board of directors for an 8-year term. UTI Lisle has also had representation with Chamber630 since 2015.

Mueller is also active in the Business Partnership Council for the Naperville School District. She was selected to be a part of the Steering Committee, which is a select group of Business Partnership Council members chosen because of their active engagement in the council. The Steering Committee helps drive the strategies and action plans of the overall Business Partnership Council.

Mueller also leads partnerships with local high schools to help with college and career pathway initiatives, spreading awareness about trade school education opportunities. UTI Lisle hosts high school shadow and job shadow events to help inspire the next generation of technicians.

Mueller is also a visible spokesperson for UTI Lisle, appearing on local television programs, writing for local publications and participating in education panels.

Mueller says her vision for UTI Lisle is to continue to meet industry demands and feed qualified technicians to the industry, as well as to continue to grow a strong presence in the local market and expand program offerings. Mueller wants UTI Lisle to continue to develop industry partner relationships for both student and industry success, while maintaining its mission of having a positive and engaging campus culture.

Mueller’s Philosophy on Trade School Education

Mueller says there are some misconceptions about the value of trade school education, which she and her team at UTI Lisle try to actively dispel. She asserts going to a 4-year college or university is not the only viable path for career success, pointing to outstanding graduation and hiring rates for trade school students.

“Our graduates are in high demand, and the jobs aren’t going to be shipped overseas,” says Mueller.

A major benefit of trade school education at UTI Lisle, Mueller says, is that all instructors have real-world experience and are Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)-certified in the classes they teach. The majority of instructors at UTI Lisle are master-certified technicians.

In addition to the expert skills UTI Lisle instructors teach, they take a holistic approach in the classroom, focusing on both technical abilities and professionalism. The UTI Lisle team is proactive in providing support for struggling students, with employment services and education teams coming together to problem-solve for the betterment of students.

Outside of UTI

Mueller was born in Berwyn, Illinois, in 1970 and grew up in Westchester, Illinois. She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology and Sociology from Purdue University and a Master’s Degree in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago. Prior to working at UTI, Mueller was a social worker in residential care, including working at Mercy Home for Boys & Girls.

Mueller has been married to her husband for 17 years and has two adult step-children, Kylie and Conlan. She and her husband also have an adorable 11-year-old lab mix named Bogie. Mueller has enjoyed volunteering at dog rescue centers.

When she’s not working, Mueller loves exercising, taking yoga and conditioning classes, and running. She and her husband are active and frequently hike and walk outdoors.

Mueller and her husband try a fun new activity every quarter so they’re always experiencing something new. Some of the activities they’ve tried so far include curling, archery, a ropes course in the trees, distillery tours, stand-up paddle board yoga, touring a chocolate making factory, taking healthy Indian cooking classes, going on a cemetery tour, corn mazes, charter fishing, a dinner detective night, mentalist entertainment, BINGO, whale watching, visiting a medium, jazz music at the Shedd Aquarium and extreme trampolining.
