UTI Avondale President

Adrian Cordova has been with Universal Technical Institute (UTI) since 2008. He was Campus President for UTI Avondale in Arizona, from 2008-2010 and has again served in the role since 2018. Since 2010, Cordova has been UTI’s Vice President of Advanced Training Recruitment, overseeing recruitment for students into UTI's Manufacturer-Specific Advanced Training programs and managing OEM partnerships in the programs.

Also since 2010, Cordova has been a Regional Vice President with UTI, where he currently oversees operations for campuses in Avondale; Long Beach, California; Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas; and Lisle, Illinois.

Under Cordova’s leadership, UTI Avondale launched its Welding Technology Training program in 2018, which joined the school’s core Automotive and Diesel programs. UTI Avondale was also the pilot school for UTI’s Tech II curriculum, which was introduced to the Dallas/Fort Worth metro model campus once it opened in 2010.

Cordova says he is very proud that the 18-month pilot program project at UTI Avondale was successful, demonstrating the value of the new curriculum that will likely roll out to most campuses in the future.

As a UTI Regional VP and Campus President, Cordova is constantly working on developing relationships to benefit the campuses he represents. In Avondale, Cordova has established connections with the mayor and state and federal legislators.

UTI’s first campus was founded in Arizona more than 50 years ago. As a result, the Avondale campus is steeped in history and receives frequent traffic from national OEM partners and public figures, including government representatives.

Cordova strives to make the Avondale campus an exceptional representation of the UTI brand, with world-class facilities, superior student support services and effective classroom instruction.

A testament to Cordova’s efforts, the UTI Avondale campus received excellent marks on its most recent accreditation by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges (ACCSC).

Cordova’s Philosophy on Trade School Education

Cordova says the UTI team is pro-education, whether that’s at a trade school like UTI or at another institution. Cordova says post-secondary education helps people discover potential skills and advance their skills in the fields they’re passionate in, whatever they choose to do.

Cordova says trade school or technical education does not get enough attention and recognition for the value it brings. It’s Cordova’s personal philosophy, as well as UTI’s, to continue to promote the message of the great opportunities available in the skilled trades.

Cordova’s vision for every campus is to achieve the best student results possible, to graduate as many students as possible, and to assist students to help them find their dream jobs so they can be successful in their careers.

Goals for UTI

Cordova says the service-based education and mission UTI promotes are what have kept him with UTI for more than a decade. He thrives on meeting students, employers and OEMs, and enjoys hearing stories about successful graduates and the great career opportunities and growth they have experienced.

Cordova has a student-first outlook for UTI, knowing that the success of UTI is dependent on student results. He empowers his teams to work together to be effective partners for students. When students are facing academic challenges, his teams support them early on, which has positively impacted student retention on UTI campuses.

Cordova says it’s his goal to continue to build sustainable relationships with all parties affecting student success, from parents to employers to instructors. Cordova says the focus of UTI is to create people-based solutions in all operations of the technology-focused UTI campuses.

Outside of UTI

Cordova was born in Mexico City in 1971 and lived in Acapulco and Tijuana, Mexico, for 17 years. He also lived in San Diego for 21 years. He is married to his wife, Rocio, and has a son, Adrian, who is a 23-year-old engineer.

Cordova has a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his Executive MBA from Arizona State University in spring 2020. Cordova was a tennis player in college and played tennis professionally for a couple of years.

Prior to joining the education sector at UTI after he was recruited for the Avondale Campus President role, Cordova’s background was in operations and business development, mostly in VP of Operations or Chief Operating Officer roles.

He worked for various manufacturing and wholesale logistics companies, running manufacturing plants in Mexico and North America for consumer goods products including shoes, women’s fashion and high-end writing instruments. Cordova has managed up to 4,000 employees across multiple locations around the world.

Cordova is fluent in Spanish and English. He also speaks some German and Portuguese as a result of business travel to Brazil.

When Cordova is not working, he loves spending time with his family and traveling.
