FAQs

Students ask: "What do I graduate with?"
Graduates of Advanced Training Programs earn Factory Credentials which are fully recognized by the manufacturer and the hiring dealers. Factory training takes years off of your training cycle as each credential represents an instructor led or a self-study course. Remember that in the dealership environment technicians usually get only one or two instructor led courses per year.

Following is an example of the time benefit to CTG Training:

  • BMW STEP covers 18 BMW instructor lead courses
  • If your dealer sent you to three courses per year (typically they can only afford to lose you for 1 course per year), it would still take 6 years to complete 18 instructor led courses
For details about the training you receive, check out the Training Overview for each program.
Students ask: "Will I make more money?"
Since Advanced Training graduates have earned the factory credentials and practiced their skills on live vehicle during training, we find that they move up rapidly. Most graduates become flat rate technicians within the first 6 months (some top students have made in as little as 2 weeks). Although there is no guarantee of employment our records indicate that Advanced Training graduates out earn mechanics without manufacturer specific training. Also, with Advanced Training you are typically saving years off your training cycle. You've probably heard the old adage; "Time is Money". Very true.
Students ask: "How do I get accepted to Brand X?"
Be careful here. We find that sometimes students are so focused on one particular brand that they lose sight of the tremendous opportunity. All of the Advanced Training programs get graduates well on their way to being flat rate technicians In fact most graduates are well on their way to becoming Master Certified technicians within the first few years of employment. If in 9 to 27 weeks you can get many of the credentials needed to become a master tech, does the brand really matter?

We encourage students to pursue their brand of choice = Brand X. However, since application to many Advanced training program is highly competitive, we encourage students to be open to a 2nd or 3rd opportunity in case Brand X does not work out. Remember, it's about the Opportunity, not the Brand!

Students ask: "What's the difference between a MSAT and an elective?"
An MSAT is endorsed and paid for by the manufacturer. An elective is endorsed, but not paid for, by the manufacturer.
Students ask: "How do I apply for Advanced Training?"
How to Apply for MSAT Training

When a UTI student reaches 8 courses prior to their graduation date they are welcome to begin the acceptance process for an MSAT program. The steps for acceptance are as follows:

  • There are a limited number of interview slots given to each campus every three weeks.
  • At the start of every course your campus’s Advanced Training Representatives, (ATR's) pull a list of students who are 8 courses from graduation.
  • The list is sorted by GPA and Attendance - students with the highest GPA's and Attendance will interview first with the ATR.
  • If the student candidate meets the criteria for selection and passes the ATR interview then they will be offered an opportunity to interview with the Advanced Training Manager (ATM).
  • The ATM interview typically takes place 6 or 7 courses from graduation.
  • ATM's make the final decision about candidate acceptance.
  • The ATM will make one of three possible decisions by the end of the interview:
    • 1) Accepted: At which time the candidate is assigned a specific start date and training location.
    • 2) Denied: At which time the candidate can see the ATR about applying for a different MSAT program.
    • 3) Provisional: In this case the ATM has determined to take a second look at the candidate in the future; possibly after the candidate has completed a few courses in an elective like FACT or the ATM has had a chance to speak to a few dealers about the candidate.
  • Accepted students are expected to "check-in" once per month via email or phone with the ATM until their assigned class begins.

How to Apply for Elective Training

Each elective is different so please visit the Employment Services Department at your campus for details.

In the mean time, stay focused on school and put together the best GAME that you can!
